Our commitment to keeping our customers and workforce safe

With the Government’s extension of the COVID-19 lockdown, it is vital that we keep Defence working during these unprecedented times. It is also extremely important that the 47,000 Service family homes we manage continue to be kept clean, safe and compliant, allowing our Armed Forces to continue with their operational duties.

The health and safety of our customers and our staff is our number one priority and as we continue to carry out response and planned maintenance, and grounds maintenance across the Defence estate, we would like to assure you that we are doing so in line with Government and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advice. 

Gas and electrical safety checks continue to be a legal requirement for all landlords, including the MOD, and are an essential part of keeping military homes in order to reduce the potential for a carbon monoxide incident or an electrical fire. Our engineers understand and are clear about the protocol they need to follow when entering homes. They are proud of their key worker status and understand the importance of the work they do.

Our commitment

We share the concerns of Service personnel and their families at this difficult time and our engineers have committed to following rigorous working practices to ensure the safety of occupants before entering their homes to carry out essential safety tasks. For example, they will call ahead of the appointment, ask that rooms are vacated where work is required and maintain high levels of personal hygiene throughout their visit.

Our working practices, method statements and risk assessments are continuously reviewed and we’re liaising daily with teams on site to reinforce our messages, answer any questions and provide clear and up-to-date instruction on this ever-changing situation.

Our reassurance

Amey’s engineers will:

  • confirm in advance whether anyone at the property is self-isolating
  • wash hands for 20+ seconds using soap and warm water at the nearest available hand wash basin on arrival and before departure
  • use alcohol-based anti-bacterial hand gel where there are no hand washing facilities
  • wear an Amey ID card in a visible position
  • maintain social distancing by remaining more than 2m from other people at all times
  • ask occupants to move to another room/area while work is carried out
  • clean tools and equipment using sanitisation spray or wipes

Supporting our Armed Forces through the pandemic, Amey and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) continue to assist the repatriation of more than 130 UK Service families stationed overseas who need to return home quickly due to the virus. With DIO, we have worked at pace to identify suitable properties and bring them to Move In standard for families within 48 hours. This work is being carried out following Government and HSE official guidance and is regularly reviewed to ensure the safety of all involved.
