Amey is committed to supporting SMEs

Amey sits at the heart of the UK's Armed Forces community, providing and maintaining critical infrastructure and facilities, from runways and bunkers, to supporting Service families nationwide.

We understand the importance of the work we do and also recognise that we don’t have always have the answers. That’s why we rely on the knowledge and the know-how of our supply chain partners to deliver the service our Armed Forces deserve.

In Scotland, we work with around 80 local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) who know their areas well. They are familiar with the landscape, they know the people and often have a long history in the local community. We recognise the immense knowledge they have and consistently look to draw on these skills to continuously improve the service we provide to our customers.

In the last twelve months, we’ve spent more than £10 million with SMEs in Scotland, with £3 million of that being paid directly to local SMEs in Scotland, securing jobs and supporting the local economy. We value their understanding of the community they work in and know that they are able to make quick decisions and can be flexible if needed.

Whilst the benefits of using local suppliers is obvious, there are also benefits for the businesses who work with us. Our relationship with them is built on openness and trust and as part of this, we pay all our SMEs for the work they do every two weeks. Additionally, all SME employees need to be appropriately security cleared to work on the MOD’s secure sites which provides reassurance to others that they are a trustworthy organisation.

Lovat’s are local supplier who have worked with Amey for many years and through good communication and a shared set of ideals have been delivering well for our customers in Scotland.

Once businesses become one of Amey’s SMEs they are able to tender for maintenance or project work in other areas of Amey’s Defence contracts. With their staff already having security clearance, it makes the tendering process much easier for them, they also know how Amey work, our processes and procedures and the contract ins and outs. We currently have a number of SMEs who have been able to expand their businesses by working across both our Regional Prime and our Housing contracts, providing us with a consistent, effective and value for money service which is so important to our customers.

Bell Group have been working on MOD contracts for five years and cover multiple sites throughout Scotland, employing over 30 engineers and 12 support staff such as surveyors and contract managers.

It also provides us with the opportunity to bid for additional and more varied work across the UK with Amey. Fortnightly payments ensure a smooth working relationship which allows us to work in partnership with our suppliers and contractors to meet the tight timescales required by the contract. We look forward to continuing our work with Amey and are proud to work with them on such a prestigious contract.”
