Earlier this year RAF Shawbury secured funding from a local RAF charity to have the play park at Shelton Fields, Shrewsbury, refurbished for the children of local Service families.
Our local Amey Housing team were approached to see if they could offer assistance and were more than happy to lend a hand. A new design was drawn to extend the footprint of the play park so that more children could enjoy the area and work began to replace the outdated equipment in March 2019.
To brighten up the area and to add a much needed injection of colour, a new, safety approved floor covering was installed which included a ‘nod to the RAF’ in the form of a fun take on the RAF roundel.
As the funding didn’t include the cost of the grounds maintenance work needed to support the project, our local supply chain partner, Tivoli Ltd, stepped up and offered their services for free. Tivoli cut back and removed more than 12sqm of overgrown hedges and bushes to facilitate the start of the project which ensured that the Station completed the project within their budget.
The park was refurbished and delivered to the unit by Proludic, who supplied the play equipment and flooring, and was formally opened by Lady Elaine Hiller, the wife of Chief of the Air Staff. Lady Hiller, accompanied by Group Captain Chris Mullen, Station Commander, spent some time with our local Amey and Tivoli teams and was taken on a short tour of the Service Families Estate.
Local children now have a safe and stimulating place to let off steam and local families couldn’t be happier with what has been achieved.
