Colin completes Sahara Trek challenge, raising over £2300 for SSAFA!

We’re always really proud when members of our team take time out to support our Armed Forces and their families, especially when they choose to raise much needed funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity and our corporate charity partner.

Since we announced our commitment in 2015 to raise £250,000 for SSAFA within the five years of our contracts, our employees and supply chain partners have been busy organising and taking part in lots of fundraising activities – from holding raffles and coffee mornings to scaling mountains and cycling across the UK – our teams have done it all. And our total currently stands at a staggering £240,700!

Colin Jones, our Delivery Manager at Duke of Gloucester Barracks, is the latest team member to add his support to SSAFA, by completing a gruelling four day hike across the Sahara Desert. In temperatures ranging from around 34 Degrees C during the day and down to 4 Degrees C at night, Colin trekked more than 60km across the Atlas Mountains, crossed ancient dried up rivers, rocky outcrops, sand dunes before ending up in a small village on the edge of the Sahara.

Colin said “Supporting the Armed Forces is something I do every day as part of my role but I really wanted to give something back to the hard working Servicemen and women who do so much for us. Anyone who knows me will say that I’m not really built for walking, let alone trekking but I was determined to increase my fitness and to be able to combine this with raising money for SSAFA seemed the perfect match! There were certainly some tough days and I did wonder whether I’d chosen the right challenge but knowing the difference my fundraising might make to someone’s life is what kept me going. I’m absolutely delighted to have raised £2318 to help SSAFA and would like to thank everyone who supported me along the way. There is still time to donate here: Colin’s Sahara Trek”.

Annastasia Williams, SSAFA’s Corporate Partnerships Officer, added “We are absolutely thrilled that Colin chose to take on this difficult challenge in aid of SSAFA. Colin raised over £2,300 and this will greatly benefit the lives of SSAFA’s mentees. We are very lucky to be partnered with such a pro-active company and hope that Colin’s fundraising will inspire others to take part in similar challenges to raise money for SSAFA. Thank you Colin!
