Amey and DIO (housing) collaborative workshop

Earlier this year, representatives from Amey and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) held a workshop aimed at strengthening communication skills and identifying new and creative ways of working together to improve the service we provide to our customers.

We recently held our second workshop and invited Regional Delivery Accommodation colleagues from DIO and representatives from Amey’s Additional Works team with a sharp focus on overcoming some of the challenges that can sometimes arise when planning projects.

The session was co-hosted by Andrew Martin, DIO’s Development Programme Manager, and Bradley Tyrrell, Amey’s Head of Pre-Delivery, whose aim was to demonstrate the benefits of working together and, with the help of those present, to agree and develop an agreed set of behaviours improve collaboration.

The attendees were organised into a mixture of two teams and asked to think about how they thought the perfect housing contract would look like. They then put their ideas onto paper and shared their thoughts with the wider audience. The exercise showed that everyone shared the same vision of a perfect contract, but it also highlighted the reality of where we actually are. Teams then took part in a Relationship Perception Diagnosis task which was an opportunity for them to be totally honest with each other and share some of the things that frustrate them, as well as the things they (the other party) do that support them.

Bradley said “The group discussed how we could better resolve some of the challenges we encounter when delivering a project and committed to better understanding the scope of the contract and to find more effective ways to deliver outcomes jointly. They also agreed that positive, common language should be used by both parties when communicating to customers which will provide a consistent approach to contract deliverables.”

The session ended with everyone reading through the jointly agreed partnering behaviours charter and pledging to follow the charter’s basic principles of being open, trustworthy, tolerant, empathetic and respectful to their work colleagues. Findings from the workshop will be incorporated into the Amey/DIO joint housing improvement plan as part of our journey to continuously improve our customer service.
